Law, Policy & Governance

Describe the systems used to govern public, private, and for-profit institutions of all types (two-year, four-year, graduate, professional, vocational, etc.) in one’s state/province and nation.

In my Community College class I’ve had the opportunity to research and better understand how colleges and universities are funded, run, supported by the local and federal government, state implications, and other factors that contribute to the success or hardships of community colleges. In this annotation I discuss how funding from government funding can vary from institution to institution and affect the success of students and accessibility to education.

Explain parameters established by relevant external and internal governing systems as related to one’s professional practice.

When looking at governing laws that affect the way in which student affairs professionals uphold their practice a major law that comes into play is FERPA and HIPPA, these laws create legal boundaries between students and concerned parties and are difficult to work around when students are going through a transition but are drastically ripped from the ability to be cared for by guardians. When parents call about concerns related to their students, or professors are inquiring about their student’s wellbeing we are unable to confirm or deny if they are in our buildings, in our care, and doing alright. This is hard when our whole goal as professionals is to develop a student and support them, while also honoring that their family members or close friends are also transitioning during this process.

I’ve had to read and understand laws closely to be able to properly handle conversations with parents, telling them the information they need, but being vague enough to follow laws and keep the privacy and integrity of a student intact.

Critically examine laws and policies to ensure their equitable and fair use on campus.

While at the Annual NODA conference I presented on creating inclusive and accessible practices for student with disabilities in the orientation process. This is an incredibly important topic for me as I think often populations of students are often overlook or fly under the radar in regards to their needs and the first time they step onto a campus is orientation. This is a critical time for students with disabilities to know their resources and be included in the campus community. During this presentation we worked hard to go over thoroughly but efficiently the American Disabilities Act and explain how this act may influence orientation overall

Identify major internal and external stakeholders, policymakers, and special interest groups who influence policy at the national, state/provincial, local, and institutional levels.

In my Community College class I have taken, one of the assignments was to take a look at president Obama’s free community college plan and dissect the plan from various different angles. In order to do tis I had to step into the shoes of the multiple different stake holders that would be made to implant and fun the changes as well as students whom would reap the benefits or struggle with the challenges of the plan.

Below you will find the reaction paper I wrote to the free community college plan

Describe the student conduct process at the institutional level and demonstrate concern for the legal, social, moral, educational, and ethical expectations of the community.

At Curry College we have a very educational and restorative take on the student conduct process. We take restorative justice genuinely seriously for the process and take steps and actions to be sure that community standards, expectation and impact are being respected and understood. We also look to uphold state and federal laws with the conduct process working closely with the Public Safety department as well as enforcing safe community standards between residents and their communities.
